The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of the Hummer Electrified
The Hummer was first unveiled in 1992 as a civilian version of the M998 Humvee.
It quickly became an environmentalist's nightmare due to its gas-guzzling ways.
The brand was halted in 2010 but was reinvented by General Motors (GM) in an electrified form in 2020.
The Hummer took off, with more than 90,000 of the vehicles being reserved, causing GM to stop taking reservations due to limited capacity.
Recalls for 2022 Hummer EVs and BrightDrop EV600 electric vans were issued the following month due to a battery pack sealing problem.
The Hummer's popularity and GM's efforts to make more resulted in dismal first-quarter sales numbers, with only two deliveries compared to 854 sold the previous year.
GM aims to build 50,000 EVs in North America through June and double that in the second half of the year, calling 2023 a "breakout year for electric vehicles" as it takes on Tesla.
GM offered buyouts to its U.S. salaried workforce and some global executives as part of its plan to reduce costs and concentrate on developing electric vehicles.
