On December 16, 2024, a 45-year-old Sumatran elephant named Molly died after being swept away by strong river currents at Bali Zoo.

The accident occurred when Molly was walking as there was sudden rainfall which made the water level in the river rise dangerously.

Local citizens had participated in the nocturnal search with zoo members. On December 17, Molly was recovered in a rocky segment of the river.

Bali Zoo will bury her within the zoo grounds mourning, for she has served faithfully since 2013 as one of its esteemed family members.

The Sumatran elephant is found only between 2,400 and 2,800 alive. These are due to deforestation and human-elephant conflict, as well as illegal poaching.

Heavy rain in Indonesia causes extensive flooding and landslides and badly devastates the wildlife as well as the human populations.

The death of Molly exposes that Sumatran elephants continue to suffer because of habitat loss and mounting environmental challenges.

Cooperative efforts from the residents of the localities as well as from zoo staff proved crucial for retrieving the body of Molly.
