Plectrum: Lazzarini’s Hydrofoil Superyacht Powered by Hydrogen

Lazzarini Design Studio has unveiled its latest superyacht concept, the Plectrum, which uses hydrofoil technology to lift the vessel above the surface of water and provide a flying experience on water at high speeds. 

The design of foiling monohulls used in the America's Cup served as inspiration for the Plectrum. 

The yacht is equipped with three hydrogen-powered motors with a total capacity of 15,000 horsepower, making it capable of speeds up to 75 knots. 

An adjustable foil system onboard allows for modifications depending on the yacht's cruising requirements and can expand from a width of 15 meters to 20 meters when the foil is open. 

The Plectrum is made entirely from dry carbon fiber composite materials, making it lightweight and enabling faster speeds. 

The superyacht features six usable cabins, a shipowner suite, a helipad, and a beach club with a stylish swimming pool over its four levels. 

The hull shape of the Plectrum was also inspired by boats used in the America's Cup, including Prada's 2023 model. 

Hydrofoil technology uses wings under the boat's hull to lift it up, out of the water, while speeding up, allowing the yacht to glide on top of the water surface. 

Lazzarini Design Studio has previously showcased other dynamic superyacht designs, including the Sovrano, a 169-meter superyacht concept with twin helipads and a retractable deck, but the Plectrum represents the latest in their series of radical superyacht designs.
