Houston Humane Society Rescues Bats From Winter Freeze To Successfully Release Them Into The Wild

The Houston Humane Society has been rescuing bats from freezing temperatures. They have announced plans to release them on December 28 at Waugh Drive bridge at Buffalo Bayou.

Anna Saxton, marketing and event coordinator at the Wildlife Center acknowledged that out of 693 bats five of them released were taken to the non-profit Wildlife Center for rehabilitation.

 The rescue operation was led by Mary Warwick, director of the Houston Humane Society and the city’s only trained bat rehabilitator. She was aware that the bats would suffer severe hypothermia due to the freezing temperature in the Houston area on December 22.

They were kept in separate kennels during the rehabilitation process. They were also given optimum temperature to generate hibernation-like circumstances.

The Humane Society also noticed an increased community assistance including people collecting bats and transporting them to the Wildlife Center.

The rescuers team had safety handling the bats using gloves and other ways to avoid contacting bats with bare hands.

Anna Saxton said, “If a human touches a bat with their bare hands, what will end up happening in that bat will have to be euthanized.”

Saxton also said that donations can be given to the Jeannie Gresko Memorial Building Fund to help them rescue these kinds of animals.

 Currently the Houston Humane Society is gathering funding for a new and permanent Wildlife Center for rescuing more animals. The non-profit is situated in a leased space in the Hammerly Boulevard strip mall.
