Futuristic Installation ‘Portal’ Connects Two European Cities To Uplift Communities From Isolation
Engineers from the LinkMenų fabrikas center at Vilnius Tech have designed and constructed futuristic installations called 'Portals' that enable real-time communication between two European cities, Vilnius in Lithuania and Lublin in Poland.
The 'Portals' are large round orbs with screens and cameras, designed to connect and unite people from different cities during the pandemic and increasing social isolation.
The design of the 'Portals' is minimalist, with LED lights displaying the image of a futuristic city and circular orbs chosen as a symbol of an interactive bridge.
Both 'Portals' are equipped with large screens, high-quality cameras, and an internet connection that streams real-time at both locations, allowing residents to interact with each other even if they can't physically step through the portal.
Vilnius and Lublin are 376 miles away from each other, but the 'Portals' invite people to rise above prejudices and frictions to unite together.
The project was unveiled at the end of a lengthy, stressful, divisive, and isolating pandemic year and was aimed for eventual installation in multiple cities.
The task of constructing the 'Portals' was assigned to Vilnius Technical University and took five years for completion.
The project team aims to build similar bridges connecting Reykjavik in Iceland and London in England.
The 'Portal' project is a reminder that many present-day technologies were originally presented in Sci-Fi works, and it might just be the first chapter in the ongoing story of 'Portals'.
