Packaged drinking water is a daily necessity for people in India, especially the ones who are commuting throughout the day.

FSSAI is a part of the government body of India, that oversees the health of the population by regulating the quality of food articles in the market, domestic or imported.

Despite being in such high demand, this commodity failed to fulfill the safety criteria as listed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India adhering to packaged drinking water.

Just a few days prior, FSSAI was forced to reclassify packaged drinking water under the category of “high-risk” food and would now require third party food safety audits.

This reclassification was necessary to keep a check on deteriorating quality of packaged/ mineral drinking water and would now require frequent inspections.

Packaged/mineral drinking water is not the only commodity that made the list, other consumables like Indian sweets, meat products, dairy products and so on are also categorised as the same.

That FSSAI standards are implemented on food articles in the states and the union territories are looked after by the state food commissioners.

This reclassification has raised concerns among the industry of mineral/packaged drinking water about various factors, especially the cost.
