The Hera mission’s prime objective is to analyze the impact made on the Dimorphos asteroid during the DART mission by NASA in 2022.
Hera will help scientists understand the usefulness of kinetic impact for asteroid deflection.
During the mission mass, composition and features of impact on dimorphos will be studied using 12 instruments.
Hera is crewed with two cubesats, Juventas and Milani, to provide radar service and conduct multispectral imaging, respectively.
A Mars flyby is planned during the autumn of 2025, helping the spacecraft gain momentum.
Alongside ESA and NASA, 18 other countries contributed to this mission.
Data from this mission will help scientists refine the asteroid deflection methods.
Findings from these experiments enrich our understanding of near-earth objects and influence our future tactic toward incoming comic danger.
