EPA, DOE Invest $850M in 43 Methane Reduction Projects

The EPA and the DOE have committed $850 million to 43 projects that will help reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, and help small operators, Tribal entities, and organizations

Projects under the Inflation Reduction Act involved those by a Tribal consortium, universities, and private companies across the country.

Concentration areas are emissions reductions from low-producing operations, early-commercial technology advancement, and enhancement of methane detection and community data access

Methane, responsible for one-third of global warming, traps 28 times more heat than CO₂ over 100 years, with the oil and gas sector being the largest U.S. industrial source.

The EPA projects a covered source of methane emissions decrease by 80% from 2024 to 2038.

Said EPA Administrator Michael Regan, "These investments will be key to pollution reductions and job creation."

That action aligns with the Justice40 Initiative, assisting communities impacted by pollution.

Projects in the Methane Emissions Reduction Program will be conducted as part of DOE's work by the National Energy Technology Laboratory.
