Miniature dachshund Valerie survived 529 days alone in Australia's rugged Kangaroo Island wilderness after fleeing from a camping trip with her owners in November 2023

Valerie proved elusive in "survival mode," running from humans and vehicles while competing with native wildlife like possums and kangaroos for food left by rescuers.

The breakthrough came when rescuers used strips from owner Georgia's worn T-shirt to create scent trails leading to a specially prepared trap furnished with Valerie's toys and bed.

Once captured, Valerie was found "fit and well" despite enduring harsh winters, dry summers, and threats from predators like eagles and snakes.

When you see her you just think, 'How, how did you survive that long!?'" said Lisa Karran from Kangala Wildlife Rescue, who confirmed Valerie will soon reunite with her delighted owners.
