California Earthquakes Result in Closure of Major State Park Route
Mattole Road in Humboldt Redwoods State Park is closed indefinitely due to a landslide caused by recent earthquakes.
The closure was caused by ground subsidence from heavy rainfall and the shifting soil has caused the road to buckle.
The impacted area spans 90 acres and vehicles cannot pass.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Ferndale, Northern California a month ago, causing significant damage and two fatalities.
Earthquakes measuring 3.1 and 5.4 magnitudes also hit the East Bay and Rio Dell, respectively.
The role of these earthquakes in damaging Mattole Road is unclear but plausible.
The National Weather Service reported a 4.2 magnitude earthquake 3.7 miles south of Malibu Beach on Wednesday with no major injuries or damage.
Geologists and engineers will assess the road when it is safe to do so to determine next steps.
The state park has released new images of the damage and advised the public to stay clear of the area.
