Muscle and liver samples of 13 sharpnose sharks were found to have large amounts of cocaine.
The cocaine concentrations in these samples were 100-fold higher than in other marine organisms.
Samples were collected in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes region from September 2021 to August 2023.
Marine ecotoxicologists’ Sara Novais and Enrico Mendes Saggioro make their statements about the adverse effects of their findings.
They added, “sharks are used by man for food in Brazil as in many other countries "
Cocaine likely reaches the sea through wastewater from users and laboratories synthesising the drug.
The adverse behavioural impacts on sharks have been confirmed, but physiological effects are still being studied.
The foundation will continue to study the effects of this scenario.
