A packaging defect that could lead to hidden bacterial growth has triggered Walmart to recall thousands of its store-brand chicken broth cartons. The recall affects 48-ounce Great Value Chicken Broth sold in nine Southern states.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said. The company immediately removed the affected products from 242 stores after discovering the packaging issue.
The problem lies in the container’s packaging, which normally keeps bacteria out. When this barrier fails, harmful bacteria can grow without changing how the broth looks, smells, or tastes. This makes it impossible to tell if the product has gone bad just by checking it.
The Food and Drug Administration warns that even sealed cartons from the affected batch could be unsafe. The recalled products have a “Best if Used by” date of March 25, 2026, batch code 98F09234, and UPC 007874206684.
Tree House Foods Inc., which makes the broth for Walmart, found that the packaging could fail to keep the product sterile. While no one has reported getting sick, the FDA says customers should return the broth for a refund or throw it away.
The recall covers stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. This notice comes as Walmart also deals with another food safety issue – a separate recall of Marketside Broccoli Florets over possible listeria contamination in 20 states.
