Volvo is introducing five new cars in 2025, including an electric sedan to challenge Tesla. This news follows Volvo’s best-ever sales year in 2024 when it sold 763,389 cars worldwide.

The new ES90 electric sedan aims to take on Tesla’s Model S. It will use the same SPA2 platform as their EX90 electric SUV and come with advanced safety features including roof-mounted Lidar sensors for enhanced driving safety. The EX90’s capabilities suggest the ES90 could offer more than 300 miles of driving range. Industry estimates place its price between $80,000 and $100,000.

Coming even sooner is the EX30 Cross Country, arriving in February. It’s a tougher version of Volvo’s smallest electric SUV, with higher ground clearance and special tyres for rough roads. Think of it as an electric car that’s ready for camping trips and outdoor adventures.

Volvo’s boss, Jim Rowan, is honest about the challenges ahead. “2024 was a year of two halves,” he says, explaining that fewer people bought cars in the second half of the year. Chinese car companies are also selling more cars globally, creating more competition.

Still, Volvo’s electric car sales grew by 54% in 2024, making up nearly a quarter of all their sales. When you add in their plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), these more eco-friendly options made up 46% of what Volvo sold.

The company is also planning a new plug-in hybrid car specifically for China and will update two of its current models. Car experts suggest the XC60, one of their key SUV models, will likely get a makeover.

In terms of money, Volvo made more than ever before in 2024, earning nearly $37 billion. However, they’re being careful about 2025, warning that selling cars might be harder due to global challenges and tough competition.

For car buyers, these changes mean more choices. Want a luxury electric sedan? The ES90 might be your pick. Need something smaller that can handle weekend adventures? The EX30 Cross Country could fit the bill. Prefer a plug-in hybrid? Volvo’s keeping those options too, having adjusted their earlier plans for an all-electric lineup by the decade’s end.

Looking further ahead, Volvo is already working on its next electric SUV, the EX60, set to arrive in 2026. They’re building test versions now, showing they’re serious about their long-term electric car plans.
