Tesla’s New Radar Detects

Tesla just turned on a new safety feature that works like an alert guardian inside their cars. The latest update (2025.2.6) activates a radar system that can sense if someone’s in the car—even detecting their heartbeat and breathing.

“Safety is and always will be our top priority. First come our AP safety features that are always active in every Tesla whether you are in FSD or not—the goal is to prevent crashes, but if the worst occurs—you will be protected by the best passive safety cars on the planet.” says Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering. Think of it like having an extra set of eyes that can detect movement even when blocked by seats or other objects.

Even the new 2025 Model Y now comes with this radar system as a standard feature. It’s especially helpful for parents; the system can alert them if a child is accidentally left in the car. It goes beyond just sensing weight in seats. The radar can detect actual breathing and heartbeat patterns, and if needed, it will turn on the air conditioning and send an alert to the owner’s phone.

The radar works differently from regular cameras. It uses radio waves that bounce off objects and people in the car, allowing it to precisely measure dimensions and detect movement behind obstacles that vision systems might not see.

Tesla plans to make the system even more helpful later this year. Starting in Q3 2025, it will also watch over back-seat passengers. These radars can tell the difference between passengers based on their size, helping the car adjust its safety features accordingly.

For Tesla owners with older cars, there’s good news too. The company is offering free replacements for some vehicles to add this radar feature, according to Drive Tesla Canada. This means more families can benefit from the added safety without buying a new car.

The 2025 Model Y also got other improvements. The car features improved aerodynamics and has achieved a higher EPA range rating, as mentioned in the source material.

This technology marks a big step forward in keeping passengers safe. The system adds an extra layer of protection, helping Tesla cars optimize their airbag deployment based on precise passenger classification and positioning.

By sensing vital signs and exactly where people are sitting, this radar system helps Tesla cars better protect their passengers. It’s an advanced safety feature that continuously monitors the cabin to enhance passenger protection.
