Since the launch of the Powerwall 2 in 2017, Tesla has tested the patience of fans of their solar storage solution with numerous announcements. On the occasion of the Intersolar trade fair in Munich, the Powerwall 3 is now available – presumably in Germany as well.

Previous models have faced some criticism, such as high noise levels and exposed cables. These issues of the Powerwall 1 were reportedly addressed with the second model, as t-online.de writes.

However, users of the Powerwall 2 complained about insufficient flexibility. Unlike other manufacturers, the storage capacity is fixed and cannot be expanded or customized according to one’s needs before purchase.

It remains to be seen to what extent Tesla has addressed these criticisms in the development of the Powerwall 3. The company itself claims to have improved functionality and user-friendliness.

Meanwhile, the energy capacity remains at 13.5 kilowatt-hours, the same as the Powerwall 2. It can handle up to 13 kilowatts peak solar power, providing 4.6 kilowatts of power per unit.

The device measures 101 cm in height, 60.9 cm in width, 19.3 cm in depth, and weighs 130 kg. Thus, the Powerwall 3 is slightly smaller but deeper and heavier than its predecessor.

According to Tesla, the Powerwall 3 can meet the electricity needs of most households. The goal is to store solar or grid energy for later use. The solar storage solution, according to the company, can connect to “any electrical supply system.”

The Powerwall 3 can supply single-phase loads on all three phases through phase coupling from a third-party provider. However, this configuration does not support three-phase loads, according to Tesla.

However, for integration into the home power grid, customers need to purchase the Backup Gateway 2 in addition to the Powerwall 3. This manages the connection to the grid, detects outages, and provides backup power when the Powerwall 3 is in backup mode.

The system can either directly use electricity generated by solar panels or draw from the grid. Those with a Tesla vehicle can utilize features like surplus charging. The Powerwall 3 is managed through the Tesla app.

The Powerwall 3 follows the Powerwall 1 (2015) and Powerwall 2 (2017). More than 600,000 units of these have been installed worldwide. The redesigned thermal management system of the Powerwall 3, based on insights from the Tesla Model 3, allows operation in temperatures ranging from minus 20 degrees Celsius to plus 50 degrees Celsius.

As for the price, there are currently no official details on the company’s website. To acquire a Powerwall 3, interested parties must contact a certified installation company nearby via a form.

According to reports, the Powerwall 3 is expected to cost “approximately 7,200 euros excluding VAT.” The Backup Gateway 2 costs an additional 1,000 euros. Additionally, there may be installation costs incurred.
