The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm as the Northeast Monsoon unleashes its fury over Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, S Balachandran, Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, spoke to ANI, revealing that since the monsoon’s onset on October 1, the state has already recorded a staggering 138 mm of rainfall.
Extreme Rainfall Recorded Across the State
In a mere 24 hours, the intensity of the downpour has been astounding:
- 5 places in TamilNadu recorded extremely heavy rainfall.
- 48 places recorded very heavy rainfall.
- 21 places recorded heavy rainfall.
Balachandran cautioned, “In the next 24 hours, there is a possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in one or two places in the districts of Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chennai.”
Depression Approaches Coast, Fishermen Warned
A depression over the Bay of Bengal is steadily moving towards the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast. “It is expected to cross between Nellore and Puducherry near Chennai,” Balachandran added. With the sea conditions turning rough, fishermen have been advised to steer clear of the waters in these areas.
Chennai and Other Parts of Tamil Nadu Inundated
The relentless rains have left Chennai and other parts of the state grappling with knee-deep water in residential areas and roads. The weather office predicts the downpour to continue for the next two days. A bulletin warned, “Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai districts” on Wednesday.
Depression to Cross Coast Early Morning, October 17
The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Tuesday evening. It is expected to cross the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai, during the early hours of October 17.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reassured the public that his government was prepared to handle the heavy rains. He mentioned that people were satisfied when asked about criticism over precautionary measures. Stalin visited rain-affected areas in Chennai and commended the efforts of workers from the Greater Chennai Corporation and other departments in tackling the situation.
As the Northeast Monsoon continues to batter Tamil Nadu, residents brace themselves for more heavy rains and potential disruptions. The state government remains vigilant, working round the clock to mitigate the impact of the deluge and ensure the safety of its citizens.
