A nationwide recall has been issued for Strangelove’s Salted Grapefruit mixer due to unintended fermentation that could cause bottles to explode, posing injury risks to consumers.

The recall affects both 180ml and 540ml bottles sold at major retailers including Coles, Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s, BWS, First Choice, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, and independent stores across Australia. The products were available both in-store and online.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand warned that the fermentation process has created excess alcohol and carbonation in these supposedly non-alcoholic beverages, which could result in bottle breakage or caps popping off unexpectedly.

“Consumers should not drink or open this product and should dispose of it safely,” a Food Standards Australia statement advised. “Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”

The affected products can be identified by their best-before dates:

  1. 180ml bottles: 23/05/2026 and 31/07/2026
  2. 540ml bottles: 05/01/2026, 09/02/2026, 19/03/2026, 04/05/2026, and 29/05/2026

Beyond the physical danger from exploding bottles, the fermentation process converts sugars into alcohol, which could cause illness in consumers, particularly those who are sensitive to alcohol or unaware of its presence in what was marketed as a non-alcoholic beverage.

Customers are advised to contact Strangelove Beverages at 1300 712 081 or via email at [email protected] for safe disposal instructions and reimbursement information.

This recall highlights the importance of strict quality control measures in beverage production, particularly for products marketed as non-alcoholic, where unintended fermentation can create serious safety hazards.
