The iconic Scout is back. At CES (Consumer Technology Association) 2025, Scout Motors showed off two new electric vehicles that combine old-school toughness with modern technology: the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck.

“The Traveler SUV is for the daily driver who, come Saturday, isn’t afraid to head off-course,” says Scout Motors. This family-sized SUV fits up to six people, perfect for weekend adventures or daily school runs.

These new Scouts solve a common worry about electric vehicles—running out of power far from home. The basic electric version can drive 350 miles on a single charge. For longer trips, there’s a version with a small gas generator that extends driving range to 500 miles.

“We listened to our customers and created an experience that’s intuitive, versatile, and uniquely Scout,” said Chris Benjamin, Scout Motors Chief Design Officer. “Our Community UX is grounded, warm, and approachable, yet it’s innovative and modern, offering everything drivers need without overwhelming their experience.”

Both vehicles are built tough, just like their 1960s ancestors that competed with Jeep and Ford Bronco. They use a traditional truck-style frame with a heavy-duty rear axle—unusual for electric vehicles but designed for off-road capability. When you need extra grip, both front and rear wheels can be locked for better traction on rough terrain.

The electric motors are estimated to deliver about 1,000 pounds of torque. In everyday terms, that’s enough muscle to tackle steep hills, pull heavy trailers, or climb over obstacles with ease.

Scout will build these vehicles in South Carolina, where Volkswagen Group has invested $2 billion in North America. Production starts in 2027, with the first vehicles reaching customers as 2028 models. Prices will start under $60,000—making them competitive with similar electric trucks and SUVs from Ford, GMC, and Rivian.

The new Scouts will offer drivers choice. Want a pure electric vehicle? The standard version has you covered. Worried about long trips? The generator-equipped model eliminates that stress. Both versions keep the original Scout’s go-anywhere ability while adding modern comfort and electric driving capability for daily use.

This mix of old and new shows how electric vehicles are evolving to meet real-world needs. Scout isn’t just making another electric vehicle; they’re bringing back a piece of American history with practical improvements for today’s families and adventure seekers.
