Pieces of plastic discovered in everyday cooking salts have triggered a major recall across Canada. Loblaw Companies Limited has pulled two President’s Choice products from store shelves: Mediterranean Sea Salt and Himalayan Pink Rock Salt.

The health risk is considered low by food safety officials, but experts generally agree that consuming plastic can be harmful. “Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected products,” warns the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in its December 31 announcement.

How to Check If Your Salt Is Affected:

Mediterranean Sea Salt:

  • Size: 360 grams
  • Product Code: 0 60383 97655 2
  • Best Before: Any date up to January 17, 2026

Himalayan Pink Rock Salt:

  • Size: 390 grams
  • Product Code: 0 60383 18288 5
  • Best Before: Any date up to January 17, 2026

What Should You Do?

  1. Stop using these salts immediately
  2. Keep the package for the product code
  3. Return it to any Loblaw store
  4. Ask for a refund

The recall is rated Class 3 by CFIA, meaning it poses a low risk but doesn’t meet safety standards. Think of it like finding a small piece of plastic in your food – while it might not make you seriously ill, it’s definitely not something you want to eat.
