EV Charging Network

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, General Motors (GM), and EVgo Inc. (EVGO) have joined forces to launch a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) fast charging network across the United States. This network, now operational in 13 states with 17 locations, is designed to significantly improve the EV charging infrastructure in the country.

By the end of 2023, the collaboration aims to establish at least 25 locations with fast charging capabilities, expanding to around 200 locations by the end of 2024. The ultimate goal is to set up up to 2,000 high-power fast charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers nationwide, connecting both urban and rural communities.

Adam Wright, CEO of Pilot Travel Centers LLC, emphasizes the importance of this initiative in addressing the range anxiety often associated with EV use. He highlights how these new charging locations will be crucial in improving range confidence for EV drivers.

Each charging station is designed not just for power delivery, but to provide a comprehensive, premium charging experience. They offer multiple fast charging stalls with up to 350kW capacity, ensuring quick and efficient charging. Additionally, these stations feature canopies for weather protection, pull-through charging stalls for EVs with trailers, and are situated in well-lit areas with onsite staff for added security. Travelers can also enjoy amenities such as restrooms, food and beverage options, free Wi-Fi, and 24/7 services.

The technological aspect of this initiative is also notable. EV travelers can easily locate available charging stations through various applications, including GM’s vehicle brand apps, Pilot’s myRewards Plus app, the EVgo app, and PlugShare. This digital integration streamlines the charging process, making it more accessible and user-friendly. In spring 2024, GM and Pilot Travel Centers LLC plan to introduce exclusive benefits for GM drivers, like charger reservations and discounts.

Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, reiterates GM’s commitment to an all-electric future and the role of this project in accelerating access to convenient charging. Dennis Kish, COO of EVgo, also underscores the focus on delivering a customer-centric charging experience, with robust amenities and high-power charging.
