Overview of the Paris 2024 Paralympics
After a fascinating Olympics 2024 just ended merely a few weeks ago, France’s capital, Paris, is all set to host the Paralympics starting from August 29, Thursday. The mega event will happen for eleven days. A total of 549 medals will be at stake. 4,400 athletes from 128 different countries, each with some sort of disability, will take part in this historic competition.
Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 17th Paralympics will happen on August 28, at PM time. The opening ceremony of the Olympics took place at the Seine River, whereas the opening ceremony of the Paralympics will take place on the Champs-Élysées. A “People’s Parade” will happen, which will be visible to the general public or fans and will finally arrive at the Place de la Concorde, the former site of the Olympics. From there, the climactic portion and lighting of the Paralympic torch will be staged.
Venues
The Olympics 2024 took place at 35 different locations. Out of these 35, we will again see 18 locations where the Paralympics will take place. The iconic Stade de France and La Défense Arena will again host swimming and athletics. The cycling event will be hosted by the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome. Para shooting is the only sport that is shifted out of Paris. It will be held in Châteauroux.
U.S. Participation
A total of 225 athletes from the U.S. are participating in this Paralympics. Wheelchair basketball legend Steve Serio and sitting volleyball champion Nicky Nieves are the flag bearers of the USA team at the opening ceremony. Several top U.S. Para athletes are participating in these Paralympics, such as Aaron Pike, swimmer Jessica Long, Brittni Mason of track and field, and swimmer Abbas Karimi.
India Participation
India is sending its largest-ever Para contingent, consisting of 84 athletes, to the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Among the key Indian athletes participating are Sumit Antil, the gold medalist in men’s javelin throw at the Tokyo Paralympics, Avani Lekhara, another gold medalist in Tokyo, and Krishna Nagar. India hopes that these key performers will once again make their country proud.
The first event of the tournament will begin on August 29th, Thursday. Para Badminton will kick off with the mixed doubles group stage, followed by the men’s singles and women’s singles events. Additionally, Para Table Tennis, Para Swimming, Para Taekwondo, Para Shooting, Para Cycling, and Para Archery are scheduled for the same day.
