The FDA announced a major recall affecting millions of donuts sold across the US and Canada, touching familiar brands like Dunkin’ and various grocery store products. FGF Brands started the recall on January 7, 2025, after finding possible listeria contamination in their baked goods.

“An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die,” reports the CDC. These numbers highlight why food safety officials are taking this recall seriously.

The recall affects more than just basic donuts. Shoppers should check their kitchen for pączkis, cinnamon sticks, French crullers, and apple fritters made before December 13, 2024. All these items might be at risk, whether bought from a major chain or local grocery store.

What makes this recall tricky is that the same company makes donuts for different stores and brands. You might not see “FGF Brands” on the package, but your favorite grocery store donuts could still be affected. Recent surveys show this is causing real worry – CivicScience found 81% of people are concerned about recent food recalls, with many stopping their usual purchases to stay safe.

Listeria poses special risks for certain groups. Pregnant women face a 20% chance of losing their pregnancy if infected, according to CDC data. Older adults over 65 and people with weaker immune systems also face higher risks. For most others, the symptoms might feel like food poisoning, with the CDC noting signs can include muscle aches, fever, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

This isn’t happening in isolation. The recall follows a broccoli recall last month and a Boar’s Head meats recall in July 2024, both linked to listeria concerns. The FDA labeled this a Class II recall, meaning exposure to these products may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, where the probability of serious health consequences is remote.

For shoppers wondering what to do, the steps are clear: check any store-bought donuts or pastries for expiration dates before December 13, 2024. If you find affected products, stop eating them immediately, as advised by the FDA.

A December 2024 survey showed 16% of people have already changed their shopping habits because of recent recalls. This signals growing awareness about food safety, especially when the same manufacturer supplies products to multiple familiar brands.

Health officials emphasize that while the risk is concerning, it’s manageable with proper attention. The challenge lies in tracking these products across different stores and brands, particularly since these products are sold under various grocery store brands and well-known names like Dunkin’.

This recall serves as a reminder of how our food system works – one manufacturer’s products can reach millions of homes under different brand names. While this usually means convenient access to our favorite treats, it also means we need to pay attention when safety concerns arise.
