A proposal by MahaVitaran, a subsidiary company of MSEB (Maharashtra State Electricity Board), to reduce rates for its power supply has been hailed as a miracle of this century. Generally, MV (Maharashtra Vitaran) applies to MERC (Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission) to increase power rates. But this year, Maha Vitaran, responsible for power supply to consumers, including domestic, industrial and agricultural sectors of the state, gave a pleasant surprise by requesting to decrease the power rates.

According to Vishwas Pathak, an independent director of Maha Vitaran, the proposed rate reduction will be spread over five years starting on April 1, 2025. It will be done in stages.

There are few main points in the MV proposal:

  • Reduction in rates by stages in 5 years,
  • Supply of power at the rate of 80 paise to 1 rupee during daytime from 9 to 5 o’clock to domestic consumers, and
  • To remove the burden of cross-subsidy on the industrial sector.
  • When the MERC accepts the proposal, the new rates will come into force in April this year.

Similarly, the common man will be relieved to experience a reduction in his/her monthly ‘light bill’ as it is called in the common parlance. One of the factors for subsidy for TOD (time of day) was only for industries. Now it will be extended to domestic consumers too.

It will be a New Year gift for Maharashtrians as their new year 1947 named Vishwavasu begins on 30 March, according to the Shaka Calendar.
