A burning sensation in consumers’ mouths has triggered an urgent product recall of Lidl’s chocolate-covered pretzels. The German supermarket chain’s UK division has pulled two varieties of their Alpenfest Style Salted Mini Pretzels from shelves nationwide.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) identified both milk and dark chocolate versions of the 140g pretzel packs as potentially unsafe. The affected products share batch code 8535 with a best-before date of June 30, 2025.
“These products may cause a burning sensation in the mouth, potentially causing discomfort and making them unsafe for consumption,” states the FSA’s Product Recall Information Notice (FSA-PRIN-07-2025).

This recall follows recent FSA warnings about elevated chlorate levels in certain Coca-Cola products distributed in the UK. Chlorate, a chemical byproduct of water sterilization processes, has been linked to iodine deficiency and potential thyroid complications, particularly in children.
Lidl emphasizes that customers should not consume these pretzels if purchased. The company is offering full refunds for affected products returned to any Lidl store, regardless of whether customers have their receipt.
