The Ministry of Natural Environment of the Balearic Government has opened an investigation to determine if the filming of the latest music video by American singer Katy Perry has had an environmental impact on the protected dunes of the islet of s’Espalmador, which is part of the Ses Salines Natural Park of Ibiza and Formentera.

The American star filmed her latest music video, ‘Lifetimes,’ on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, featuring scenes of her dancing and jumping in various locations, such as urban areas, a crowded nightclub, and natural settings, including the interior of the dune system of s’Espalmador. This area is marked off with poles and ropes indicating that entry is prohibited, where her entire filming crew was also reportedly present.

The Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that preliminary proceedings have opened. However, they did not specify whether a possible environmental crime is currently under investigation or if there will be a penalty, as both issues will need to be made clear during the investigation process

They also explained that the production company responsible for the music video did not have authorization to film in this natural area, nor had they requested it.Alongside the famous beach of Ses Illetes in Formentera, the dunes of s’Espalmador make up the best-preserved dune system in the Balearics and have “highly valuable in ecological terms,” according to the Balearic government on its tourism website.

S’Espalmador is a private islet located north of the island of Formentera. It has been part of the Ses Salines Natural Park of Ibiza and Formentera since 1980. It is approximately 2.9 kilometres long and 800 meters wide.

Katy Perry is not the only American star who has taken advantage of her stay in Ibiza and Formentera to work. Actor Will Smith has chosen to record his latest song in the recording studio of a luxury hotel in northern Ibiza.

Smith shared on Instagram a reel titled ‘Ibiza sunset vibes,’ where he’s seen rapping and singing part of his song, with images of the sunset from Ibiza and accompanied by friends.
