Peacock Solar Project

In a big step for our planet, bp has started building the Peacock Solar project in San Patricio County, Texas. This project, just 10 miles north of Corpus Christi, is going to make a lot of clean energy – 187MWdc to be exact!

Dave Lawler, the head of bp America, shared, “Starting the Peacock project is all about moving to cleaner energy and helping both people and the planet.” He talked about how bp is working hard to make more solar energy in the US and changing to become a company that does more than just oil.

Guess what? By the second half of 2024, Peacock Solar will be up and running! It’s going to do a lot of good – like taking the pollution of 55,000 cars out of the air every year!

But it’s not just about clean energy; it’s about helping people too. Around 300 people will get jobs building the project, and it will bring in over $25 million in taxes for the local area over 25 years.

The energy from Peacock will go to Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV), a team-up between ExxonMobil and SABIC. They make all sorts of things we use every day, like clothes, food containers, and building materials.

Paul Fritsch, the boss at GCGV, said, “We want to take good care of our planet.” He explained how the solar energy will help power their plant and cut down on pollution for a cleaner future.

And there’s more! The project is going to be a home for plants, animals, and even sheep grazing. This is called agrivoltaics – it’s a way to keep the land useful and help local farmers.

Lightsource bp, a big name in solar energy, is working with bp to make this project happen. PCL Construction and some US-based companies are also chipping in with eco-friendly solar panels and trackers.

This project is part of bp’s big plan to make 50 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2030. Texas is already a leader in solar power, and with projects like Peacock, it’s going to grow even more! This is great news for the environment and for keeping our energy secure and reliable. Here’s to a greener, cleaner future for us all!
