Hogan’s Farm Turkey Burgers have been pulled from store shelves due to undeclared sulphur dioxide, posing health risks for sensitive individuals. The recall affects products sold in Northern Ireland and Ireland with specific use-by dates in March 2025.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) have both issued alerts about the affected products. The recall includes three varieties: regular turkey burgers, Spicy Buffalo Glaze, and Asian BBQ Glaze.
“The product contains undeclared sulphur dioxide making it a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites,” the FSA warned in their official notice.
Products Being Recalled
The recall specifically targets:
- Hogan’s Farm Turkey Burgers (400g) with use-by dates of March 25, 26, and 28, 2025
- Hogan’s Farm Turkey Burgers with Spicy Buffalo Glaze (420g) with use-by dates of March 25, 26, and 28, 2025
- Hogan’s Farm Turkey Burgers with Asian BBQ Glaze (260g) with use-by dates of March 25, 26, and 27, 2025
According to the FSAI, the regular turkey burgers and Spicy Buffalo Glaze varieties lack ingredient lists entirely, while the Asian BBQ Glaze burgers display incorrect ingredient information.
Health Concerns
Sulphur dioxide, commonly used as a food preservative, can trigger serious reactions in sensitive individuals. Symptoms may include:
Similar Posts:
- Wheezing and shortness of breath
- Chest tightness and coughing
- Sneezing and nasal congestion
- Hives
In rare but serious cases, those with sulphite allergies may experience anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing or swallowing, flushing, rapid heartbeat, severe wheezing, dizziness, and gastrointestinal distress.
Consumer Advice
Dunnes Stores, where the affected products were sold, has confirmed that customers who purchased these items can return them to the store for a full refund without requiring a receipt.
The FSA and FSAI both advise consumers with sulphur dioxide sensitivity not to consume these products under any circumstances. Point-of-sale notices are being displayed in all retail locations selling the affected burgers.
“This may make these batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sulphur dioxide, and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batches,” the FSAI stated.
Other Recent Food Recalls
This turkey burger recall comes alongside another recent food safety alert in the UK. Rude Health has recalled its Chocolate Crunch Granola (400g, batch code PD24102024, best before October 24, 2025) due to possible insect infestation.
While Hogan’s Farm has not issued public statements beyond the official recalls, Rude Health has assured customers that the insects in their granola “do not pose a health risk as they are not harmful to humans,” though consumption is still not advised.
Both companies have implemented recall procedures according to food safety guidelines, with clear instructions for retailers and consumers on how to handle the affected products.
