Powerlifters Sakina Khatun and Parmjeet Kumar unfortunately didn’t perform up the mark at the Paralympics on Wednesday. Sakina secured seventh position and Parmjeet secured eighth position in the weightlifting event. Sakina is a bronze medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. But she couldn’t perform up to expectations. In the Women’s 45 kg weight lifting event at the La Chapelle Arena, she only successfully completed one lift out of three attempts. In this event, her best was recorded with an average of 86 kg. She was not up to the mark in her attempts to lift 90 kg and 92 kg in her second and third attempt.

Sakina had a disability as she contracted polio as an infant. She had won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Para games. And three years before 93 kg at the Tokyo games.

China’s Lingling Guo has created a new record in this Paralympics with a stunning lift of 123 kg. With this achievement, she clinched the gold medal. On the other hand, at the Men’s 49 kg event, Parmjeet had a below average performance as he finished eighth out of the nine participants. His best effort was 150 kg, which he achieved in the first attempt. Like Sakina, Parmjeet also recorded only one legal lift. Parmjeet was a bronze medallist at the 2018 Asian Para games.

Last year Parmjeet was in good form. He became the first Indian powerlifter to win a medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships and then he qualified for the Para games. All is not lost for India in powerlifting. They still have two participants to represent at the Paralympics this year. India will be hoping for a better performance from them. Interesting fact about Parmjeet Kumar is he was given the opportunity to be the flag bearer for India at the 2023 World Championships.
