Parents need to immediately stop using certain baby bottles and cups that let infants feed themselves, Health Canada warns. These devices can cause babies to choke or experience aspiration, where they might accidentally inhale liquid while feeding.

The warning covers four types of “hands-free” baby bottles and cups sold on AliExpress.ca. About 60 families in Canada bought these products, which came from manufacturers in China.

The danger comes from how these devices work. They prop up bottles or hold cups so babies can drink without help. But babies haven’t developed sufficient muscles yet to feed independently, and these devices can make it difficult for infants to stop feeding at the right time.

“These products must be thrown away right away,” Health Canada states. This isn’t just careful advice – these self-feeding devices are actually banned across Canada because choking is one of the main causes of serious injuries in young children.

Even though no babies have been hurt by these specific products yet, Health Canada has already removed them from AliExpress.ca. They’re also working to stop more from being sold.

Parents should know that infants naturally regurgitate small amounts while feeding. That’s why they need someone watching and helping them eat or drink. Health Canada and professional medical associations discourage unattended feeding practices.

To keep babies safe, parents can check Health Canada’s safety alert database (Healthy Canadians Recalls and Safety Alerts) to learn about dangerous products. This helps families spot and remove unsafe items before accidents happen.
