Goldwind, a leading Chinese wind turbine manufacturer, has achieved a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector by installing its mammoth 16 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine in a mere 24 hours. This feat, touted on the company’s social media, is not just about speed but also about the evolving capabilities of wind energy technology.
This 16 MW turbine, known as the GWH252-16MW, is noteworthy for its sheer size and power. It boasts a rotor diameter of 252 meters, sweeping an area of 50,000 square meters – equivalent to about seven standard football pitches. The turbine’s hub, towering at 146 meters, is as high as a 50-story building, making it a colossal structure in the offshore wind industry.
Earlier, Goldwind had already set a record with another GWH252-16MW turbine. In September, during typhoon Haiku, this turbine generated a staggering 384.1 megawatt-hours of energy in 24 hours at the Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind farm in Fujian Province. This output is enough to power approximately 170,000 homes, showcasing the remarkable potential of this technology.
