This is the computer age. Elon Musk is planning the largest supercomputer for his AI startup, xAI. According to an AFP report, he is planning to build a supercomputer to support his artificial intelligence startup xAI. It is called the “gigafactory of compute.”

The supercomputer might become functional by the end of 2025. Musk has told investors he plans to build a supercomputer dubbed the “gigafactory of compute” to support the development of his AI startup xAI. The new computer will string together 100,000 Nvidia chips. An industry news outlet reported Saturday that he “will personally hold himself responsible for delivering it on time.”

The planned supercomputer would be “at least four times the size of the biggest GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) clusters that exist today.” He was referring to GPU clusters used by Meta to train its AI models. During a recent presentation to investors, Musk outlined his vision for the supercomputer. He stated that it would surpass existing GPU clusters in size at least by fourfold.

It is truly staggering to see the vision of Musk. The aim of the billionaire is to integrate over 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips into the supercomputer. Since OpenAI’s generative AI tool ChatGPT exploded on the scene in 2022, the technology has been an area of fierce competition between tech giants Microsoft and Google, as well as Meta and startups like Anthropic and Stability AI.

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, later saying he was uncomfortable with the profit-driven direction the company was taking under the stewardship of CEO Sam Altman.

In short, billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk is planning a supercomputer for his xAI startup. The supercomputer is dubbed the “gigafactory of compute.” It will string together 100,000 Nvidia chips. It will be the largest computer built so far.
