Elon Musk, the celebrated entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, recently announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence (AI) project, XAI. Enigmatically purposed “to understand the true nature of the universe”, XAI is the latest addition to Musk’s portfolio of revolutionary businesses.
Although details about the project remain sparse, Musk confirmed his involvement with XAI via a change to his Twitter profile’s bio. This development comes on the heels of Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, highlighting his expanding influence in the technology sphere.
A diverse team of 12 individuals is listed on the recently launched XAI website, all of whom have backgrounds in esteemed AI organizations such as OpenAI, DeepMind, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and Tesla. Musk himself is included in this lineup.
Adding to the anticipation, a Twitter Space Q&A session with XAI team members is scheduled for Friday, July 14, inviting the public to engage with the new project.
Interestingly, this move into AI comes despite Musk’s previous criticisms of AI technologies. Musk notably decried OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT, for being overly “politically correct”, sparking questions about the potential direction of XAI.
