Billionaire Elon Musk plans to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) platform called TruthGPT to challenge Microsoft and Google’s AI offerings. Musk criticized Microsoft-backed OpenAI for “training the AI to lie” and becoming a “closed source”, “for-profit” organization allied with Microsoft.
Musk also accused Google co-founder Larry Page of not taking AI safety seriously. TruthGPT will be a maximum truth-seeking AI that aims to understand the universe and promote safety.
Musk believes that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans. Musk has been poaching AI researchers from Google to launch a startup to rival OpenAI. Musk has registered a firm named X.AI Corp, incorporated in Nevada, to work on an OpenAI rival.
Musk claims to prevent AI from being too powerful and manipulating public opinion or causing “civilizational destruction”. Musk previously signed a letter to pause the training of models more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months, citing potential risks to society.
Musk believes that AI is more dangerous than mismanaged aircraft design, production maintenance, or bad car production. Musk warned of the potential of civilizational destruction by AI during an interview with Tucker Carlson. TruthGPT might be a temporary project name as OpenAI has applied for a trademark for the term ‘GPT’.
Musk and a group of AI experts called for a six-month pause in developing systems more powerful than OpenAI’s newly launched GPT-4. Musk believes that TruthGPT might be the best path to safety for AI. Musk’s efforts to develop a third option to OpenAI and Google might make ripples even if he doesn’t topple the market leader.
