Stellantis North America disclosed on February 13, 2024, the distant future of the car market. To illustrate, Stellantis, which owns Chrysler as part of a conglomerate, presented its concept EV named Halcyon. Halcyon, along with other EV models from the brand, is expected to launch in 2030, paving the way for additional cars in Stellantis’ electric portfolio.

Luxurious Interior and Facilities

Halcyon is an EV that merges luxury with efficiency. Specifically, the innovative space presents extravagance through an ingenious feature called (STOW N GO), which uses biometric data to adjust storage needs. Additionally, the seats will incorporate a design that allows them to retract across the textile-infused wooden floor, creating extra space for that additional shopping bag on Sunday trips. The inclusion of a reverse yoke, particularly the steering wheel that can fold when needed, provides an extra workspace for workaholics confined to the car.

Efficiency Unfolds to an Unlimited Range

The 800-volt lithium-sulfur battery enhances the car’s efficiency. Notably, the company claims it has the capability to charge 40 miles per minute through fast-charging technology, which is yet to be revealed. The Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer Capability, currently being developed in Detroit, Michigan, includes remarkable claims of inductive charging designed to deliver an impressive unlimited range.

Chill Mode for an Upgrade in Comfort

Predictive auto-driving Level 4 autonomy is a feature capable of driving without human intervention and making necessary decisions, providing a seamless experience for both driver and passengers. Ryan Nagode, an interior designer at Chrysler, expressed his thoughts during the launch, stating, “Our idea for the Chrysler Halcyon concept was really about harmony between the exterior and interior, making sure everything flows. So overall, with the Chrysler Halcyon concept, we have tons of features baked into it.” Overall, the dimmable glass roof can be used when needed to shield from sunny weather. Furthermore, automatic window tinting provides privacy. Additionally, the Augmented Reality Head-Up Display compiles the owner’s interests and search history, suggesting entertainment such as music, movies, and more.

Will Chrysler Succeed in Transitioning to EVs?

Chrysler asserted its credentials in the first quarter of 2024 with record-breaking sales, recounting its best-ever performance. According to Stellantis North America’s official website, the main performer was the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, which was one of the top five best-selling PHEVs (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles) in the U.S. With a strong, active EV product performing reasonably well, it may be safe to assume that future EVs from Chrysler will bring the full force of technological advancement in sustainable cars. Earlier, Stellantis shared its views on the future during a past event called Stellantis: EV Day 2021, where subsidiaries like Jeep, Fiat, Opel, Dodge, and RAM explained their plans for technology, ecosystem, and financial value. CEO Carlos Tavares, in a Q&A organized during EV Day, shared his plan for a $30 billion investment in EVs, stating, “What we have in $30 billion is for the next five years and only the software part, which is related to electrification.” The commitment to EVs, with a massive fund of $30 billion, shows the promise of Stellantis and its futuristic approach towards sustainability.

Tesla’s Roadster also has a glass roof to make the cabin feel spacious, similar to the Halcyon. Visibly, looking at both cars from above, it’s possible that both ideas share common ground theoretically, aiming to give their audiences a spacious feeling as a feature. Additionally, the Genesis GV60 is another car with similar features to Halcyon, including biometrics for easy connectivity, enabling owners to have voice control.

Unknowingly Complying with Detroit’s Sustainable Plans

In November 2023, in the U.S., on a quarter-mile stretch of road in Corktown, the Michigan Transportation Department and the City of Detroit unveiled a new section built with wireless charging technology, technically known as Dynamic Wireless Charging, on 14th Street, extending between Marantette and Dalzelle Streets near Michigan Central Station.

“Developing electrified roadways may be the catalyst to accelerate interest and acceptance of EVs for all consumers,” said MDOT Director Bradley C. Wieferich. “Making it easier for EV users to find a reliable charging source without disrupting their commute supports both fleet operations and passenger travel. We’re proud to collaborate with private industry partners and the City of Detroit to support these important initiatives, leading us toward a more sustainable future with fewer emissions.”

The future looks bright as AI and charging technologies continue to improve their capabilities. Moreover, tech such as dynamic charging (wireless charging) and cloud technology (data sources) through AI mean significant advancements. For instance, Stellantis’ $30 billion investment in EV technology, along with its top brands worldwide, could have a huge impact on the future of EVs.
