Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines(SIA) have come together to accelerate decarbonization in the Asia-Pacific aviation sector. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 5th June, during the recent IATA (International Air Transport Association) General Assembly held in Dubai from June 2nd to 4th. The CEOs of both Asian carriers, Ronald Lam for Cathay Pacific and Goh Choon Phong for SIA, formalized the partnership.
To achieve this, the two carriers aim to focus on two main areas. Firstly, Cathay and SIA will jointly advocate for increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the Asia-Pacific region. Initiatives in this area will include raising public awareness about the essential role of SAF in aviation decarbonization, advocating for supportive policies in the region, and promoting the establishment of a standardized global framework for accounting and reporting to ensure transparency and verifiability of emission reductions resulting from SAF usage. The airlines will also explore potential opportunities for joint SAF purchases at selected sites.
The second area of interest will be the exchange of best practices to reduce single-use plastics, minimize waste, and improve energy efficiency in ground and freight operations. This will enable Cathay and SIA to enhance their sustainability performance and accelerate the development and implementation of sustainable solutions in their operations.
