A potentially fatal food safety threat has sparked an urgent recall of canned tuna products across major U.S. retailers. Tri-Union Seafoods discovered a critical defect in their “easy open” can lids that could allow deadly bacteria to contaminate the tuna inside.
The manufacturing flaw affects popular brands like Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s sold at Walmart, Costco, Kroger, and other stores where many Americans shop. The faulty lid design may break the can’s seal over time, creating conditions where Clostridium botulinum bacteria can grow and produce a dangerous toxin.
According to the U.S. World Health Organization, “Clostridium botulinum can grow and produce toxins in food prior to consumption. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, and vertigo, usually followed by blurred vision, dry mouth and difficulty in swallowing and speaking.”
The recall’s reach spans several regions. H-E-B branded tuna was sold in Texas stores. Costco distributed Genova products in Florida and Georgia. Walmart carried Van Camp’s tuna in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey. Trader Joe’s products reached 19 states including major markets in the Northeast and Midwest.
Food safety officials emphasize that contaminated tuna might look and smell normal. As stated in the recall notice, consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
The affected products have specific identification codes. Consumers should check their canned tuna for UPC numbers and “Best if Used By” dates ranging from December 2027 to January 2028. The complete list of codes is available through the FDA’s website.
