California Sees First Population Growth Since 2020: Over 67,000 New Residents in 2023
California’s population grew for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the state’s Department of Finance, California’s population increased by just over 67,000 people in 2023, reaching a total of 39,128,162, the first such increase since 2020. The slight population growth was the result of several factors, said the Department of Finance, including a rebound in legal foreign immigration (a net gain of 114,200 in 2023, compared to only 90,300 in 2022), more people moving to the state, and fewer people moving out of the state.
