BYD has launched a 1,000-volt electric vehicle platform that can add 249 miles of range in just 5 minutes, directly challenging one of the biggest consumer pain points in EV adoption.
The Chinese automaker’s new “Super E-Platform” supports charging speeds up to 1,000 kilowatts—double what Tesla’s Superchargers can deliver. This technology aims to make charging an electric car nearly as quick as filling up a gas tank.
“Our goal is to make charging EVs as convenient as refueling petrol cars,” said BYD founder Wang Chuanfu during the platform’s unveiling.
To support this technology, BYD plans to build more than 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China, though the company hasn’t shared specifics on timeline or investment amounts.
New Models Showcase the Platform
The platform will debut in two new models:
- Han L sedan: Accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in approx. 2 seconds
- Tang L SUV: Will offer similar high-performance specifications
These vehicles represent BYD’s push into premium, high-performance EVs with practical charging solutions.

Competitive Landscape
BYD’s move directly targets “charging anxiety“—consumers’ fear of being stranded with a depleted battery. While Tesla’s Superchargers currently offer lower charging speeds, BYD’s 1,000 kW system potentially provides much faster charging capability.

This development comes as China continues to see strong growth in EV adoption, with BYD expanding its market presence. The charging speed breakthrough could further accelerate adoption in markets where consumers have been hesitant about switching to electric.
Industry analysts note that while the technology is impressive, questions remain about grid infrastructure readiness and the real-world availability of such high-powered charging stations.
