Nudaforma Studio, founded by Marianna D’Antimo and Filippo Salis, has introduced an innovative seating system called Bizarre. This dynamic modular design primarily uses recycled polyurethane foam, addressing environmental concerns by repurposing waste from the mattress industry. Bizarre stands out for its eco-conscious approach, combining sustainability with functional, comfortable seating options.

Eco-Friendly Design: Reducing Waste with Recycled Foam

Bizarre challenges conventional perceptions of recycled materials by showcasing them rather than hiding them. During the process of inception, founders of Nudaforma doubted the primary use of virgin materials in sofa manufacturing, making them explore the possibility of using recycled foam instead.

“We started researching solutions within Italy and managed to get in touch with a startup that collects old mattresses from all over Italy and transforms them into foam aggregates,” D’Antimo and Salis told Karmactive over an email interview.

In collaboration with this mattress startup, Nudaforma developed a furniture design that used recycled foam, demonstrating that eco-friendly furniture design is possible and thereby inspiring the creation of Bizarre. This innovation sets a new standard for sustainable practices in the industry.

Modular and Ergonomic: Personalised comfort

Bizarre’s unique shapes and recycled core emphasise functional sustainability while ensuring practicality and adaptability through ergonomic and modular design principles. The system offers personalised comfort with memory foam that conforms to the body and returns to its original form.

Users who interacted with the modules at Nudaforma’s exhibition were pleasantly surprised by the comfort provided by the thick layer of memory foam. “Initially, they perceived the items as solid, but to their surprise, they discovered a thick layer of memory foam, explaining the softness,” D’Antimo and Salis shared with Karmactive.

Unique Aesthetic: Combining Functionality and Sustainability

Nudaforma’s approach involves thorough research focused on context and social scenarios, with material experimentation central to their projects. By surrounding the seating modules with recycled foam chips, the studio connects people with innovative materials and encourages interaction.

“Interaction, along with material research and experimentation, is one of the three principles that guide us at Nudaforma in design,” D’Antimo and Salis explained to Karmactive. This engagement with a diverse range of people, including children, has shown potential for future collection development and material experimentation.

The overwhelmingly positive feedback received by Nudaforma emphasises the company’s adaptability and commitment to advancing sustainable design while promoting transparency in the supply chain.

As Nudaforma continues to collaborate with the startup and develop new projects using recycled foam, Bizarre stands as an example of the studio’s dedication to combining ideas and emotions with sustainable materials. By exploring the creative and unconventional possibilities of our time, Nudaforma is paving the way for a more eco-friendly future in furniture design.
