A chemical on the packaging of two popular beers has triggered an urgent recall across Western Australia. Coles Liquor Group recalled Uberbrau Ultra Low Alcohol Lager 330mL and Henninger Lager Bottle 660mL after finding they produce an “unpleasant odour” that may cause illness if consumed.

The beers were sold at Liquorland, First Choice Liquor Market, and through Coles Online between April 2 and April 15, 2025, coinciding with the Easter weekend.

“Food products contaminated with chemicals may cause illness if consumed,” states the official recall notice from Food Standards Australia New Zealand.

The chemical affects specific batches – Uberbrau with dates P: 12/11/2024 and E: 12/02/2026, and Henninger with dates P: 05/12/2024 and E: 05/03/2026.

Anyone who bought these beers should throw them away immediately and not drink them. Those worried about their health after consuming the products should see a doctor.

Customers can get their money back by returning the beer to any Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, or First Choice Liquor Market store. Online shoppers need to call Liquorland (1300 300 640), First Choice Liquor Market (1300 308 833), or Coles Online (1800 455 400) for a refund or credit.

The recall notice doesn’t name the specific chemical or explain how it contaminated the packaging. The notice focuses on the odor from the outer packaging rather than the contents inside.

This safety issue comes as Coles Liquor Group works on unifying its retail brands (Vintage Cellars and First Choice Liquor Market) – though this business change has nothing to do with the contamination problem.
