Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) faces extensive flight disruptions as of September 29, 2024, due to a combination of technological issues and weather-related challenges. The airport released an official statement at 9:30 AM detailing the current situation and its impact on operations.

Most flights have been cancelled, with Delta Airlines suspending all flights before noon. Other airlines have also halted operations for the morning. The airport is experiencing a gradual restoration of phone and internet services, which may allow for limited flight operations later in the day. However, significant cancellations are still anticipated.

AVL officials stress the importance of passengers confirming their flight status directly with airlines before traveling to the airport. This precaution is particularly crucial as the airport’s website is not updating accurately due to ongoing technical difficulties.

Compounding the situation, many roads leading to the airport remain impassable. This affects not only travelers but also airport staff, many of whom have been working around the clock since Thursday evening. Some employees have been sleeping at the airport to maintain airfield operations and assist with relief efforts, including coordinating National Guard flights.

The airport has become a makeshift shelter for stranded passengers and community members since Thursday. Airport staff are providing water, while the on-site restaurant partner is supplying food to those taking refuge in the terminal.

Communication challenges have hindered the airport’s ability to disseminate information quickly. As phone systems gradually come back online, officials promise to provide updates as frequently as possible.

The situation at AVL is part of a larger disruption affecting the Western North Carolina region. Governor Cooper has confirmed 10 statewide deaths in the wake of Hurricane Helene, with rescue operations continuing in the area. The storm has caused widespread power outages and downed trees, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. Cellular service remains down or severely limited across much of the region.

Transportation infrastructure has also been significantly impacted. The North Carolina Department of Transportation reports that sections of I-40, U.S. 74, U.S. 64 and dozens of other U.S. and N.C. highways will remain closed for several days.

Despite these challenges, airport officials remain optimistic. “We are strong, WNC! Stay safe and support each other!” their statement concluded, emphasizing community resilience in the face of adversity.

As the situation continues to evolve, travelers are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines for the most up-to-date flight information. The airport expects disruptions to persist for at least the next few days as the region works to recover from the combined effects of technological failures and severe weather.
