A serious food safety alert has emerged as McGees recalls its Steak Burgers from Asda stores across Northern Ireland after discovering three major allergens missing from product labels. The affected burgers contain soya, sulphites, and wheat (gluten) – ingredients that can trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

The recall covers 420g packs of McGees Steak Burgers with use-by dates of February 14 and February 16, 2025. Customers can identify the affected products by the barcode 5060234451813 and batch codes 040225 and 060225.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning about the health risks these undeclared allergens pose. For people with relevant allergies or sensitivities, consuming these ingredients can lead to serious reactions. Sulphite sensitivity typically causes breathing difficulties, including wheezing and chest tightness. Wheat allergies can trigger hives and digestive issues, while gluten intolerance symptoms range from abdominal pain to bloating. Those with coeliac disease may experience more severe reactions, including diarrhea, indigestion, and skin rashes.

This recall reflects the critical importance of accurate food labeling. When allergens go undeclared, they create invisible risks for consumers with allergies and sensitivities. Proper ingredient labeling helps protect consumer safety and allows people with allergies to make informed choices about their food purchases.

Customers with allergies or sensitivities to soya, sulphites, wheat, or gluten, and those with coeliac disease, are strongly advised not to consume these burgers. The FSA emphasizes that affected products should be returned to the store immediately.
