Dominion Energy, a Virginia-based power company, recently launched its largest battery storage facility in Chesterfield County. The Dry Bridge Battery Energy Storage System, capable of storing up to 20 megawatts of electricity, is a significant addition to Dominion’s renewable energy portfolio. This facility can power approximately 5,000 homes for up to four hours and is expected to generate about $1.2 million in annual tax revenue for the county.

The operationalization of the Dry Bridge facility marks a key step in Dominion Energy’s broader strategy. The company is actively expanding its renewable energy sources, including the largest offshore wind project in the U.S. and the second-largest solar fleet nationwide. Batteries like those at Dry Bridge are crucial for balancing energy supply and demand, storing energy when demand is low and releasing it when it’s high.

Ed Baine, President of Dominion Energy Virginia, emphasizes the role of battery storage: “Battery storage is an important part of our mission of delivering reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy to our customers. As our battery storage fleet grows, it means we can continue adding more clean energy to the grid while delivering the reliability our customers expect.”

Dominion’s expansion into battery storage isn’t limited to Chesterfield. They have operational facilities in Powhatan, New Kent, and Hanover counties and are developing more in Sussex and Loudoun counties. Additionally, they recently broke ground on a 50-megawatt battery storage project at Dulles International Airport, set to be the largest in their fleet.

Their initiatives also include pilot projects at Darbytown Power Station and Virginia State University, exploring longer-duration alternatives to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Dominion Energy, serving about 7 million customers across 15 states, is committed to sustainable energy solutions, aiming for Net Zero emissions by 2050. Their approach reflects a broader trend in the energy industry toward integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing grid reliability through advanced storage solutions. This trend is crucial for meeting growing energy demands sustainably and efficiently.
