An explosion in Marseille, France caused the collapse of a building, injuring at least five people and potentially trapping up to 10 others under the rubble. The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but authorities suggest a high possibility of a gas explosion.

100+ firefighters are present at the scene trying to control the fire, but due to the rubble covering the fire, rescue efforts are faced with difficulties. Around four and 10 people were present in the building at the time of the collapse, but it is uncertain if they are alive or dead.

Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan has warned that there could be fatalities in this “terrible tragedy”. The incident took place in the La Plaine district of Marseille, which is popular for its bars and nightlife.

An investigation into the cause of the explosion will be launched, and currently, nearby streets have been blocked off. French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne have both sent their thoughts to those affected and their thanks to the firefighters. This is not the first building collapse in Marseille, France with several similar incidents occurring in the past few decades.
