Central California Struggles with Flooding and Water Management

California citizens are bracing chaos and devastation caused by the recent snow and torrential rains, which flooded several communities. The water levels at Pine Flat reservoir have reached a critical point, and officials are diverting water from the dam into the Tulare Lake to prevent dangerous flooding.

Steve Haugen, Kings River Watermaster, is requesting residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe. Predictions from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is that the region may face a record runoff season, and the worst of the floods is yet to come.

Authorities have agreed to move forward with a flood water release to decrease the amount of pressure on the Pine Flat Dam, which could impact several counties, including Fresno, Kings, and Tulare. Pine Flat Dam is presently at 78% capacity, and once the water is released, it will flow into the Tulare Lakebed to make room for future rainstorms and snowmelt.

Water releases may continue through the summer, relying on the conditions in nearby communities. For the safety of families and businesses, authorities are alerting citizens about the releases and urging people to stay informed about local and regional warnings. Pine Flat residents have been informed to avoid tap water due to the ongoing storms that have damaged the local water source.

Alternative water supply has been setup, but testing still remains to be done before it can be used for consumption. Residents can continue to flush toilets and wash dishes, but they are warned from consuming water from the tap until further notice. It is essential for residents to remain vigilant and prepared, as the risk of flooding is expected to continue throughout the season.
