Cate Blanchett amazed everyone as she walked on the 2023 Oscars red carpet in an archival Louis Vuitton gown and silk teal capelet top with statement shoulder pads showcasing her push for sustainability. Blanchett accessorized her red carpet getup with a symbolic blue ribbon made by refugees in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency, demonstrating her compassion and solidarity for those who have been forced to vacate their homes.
Blanchett was nominated for the Best Actress category at the 2023 Academy Awards for her role in Tár, and she also took home the Critics Choice Award and other accolades. Sustainability was one of the top priorities for Blanchett during this year’s awards season, as she reimagined her past red carpet gowns in new ways.
Blanchett had previously repurposed her 2015 Oscars gown for the 2023 BAFTAs, wearing it with a two-toned pearl Louis Vuitton necklace as well as matching pearl earrings. During the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Blanchett fashioned the “third iteration” of a black lace Giorgio Armani Privé gown she had worn for the 2014 Golden Globes and the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
Blanchett’s electric blue Alexander McQueen look from the 2019 Where’d You Go, Bernadette premiere made one more appearance during the 2023 London Critics’ Circle Film Awards. Blanchett’s dedication to sustainable red carpet fashion was also evident at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, where she wore an Alexander McQueen number that she later also wore to the Governors Awards in November of that year.
Blanchett believes and appreciates how film can strengthen the connective tissue that binds us all, showcasing her encounters with refugees and how they have shown her that we share many things in common.
