A mob of forester kangaroos has arrived at Auckland Zoo, bringing a touch of Australia to New Zealand just before Anzac Day. The kangaroos, a subspecies of the eastern grey kangaroo, have begun settling into their new home in the zoo’s Australia Bush Track exhibit after making the journey across the Tasman Sea.
The new arrivals are currently adapting to their surroundings under the watchful eye of the zoo’s animal experiences team. During this adjustment period, a section of the Australia Bush Track has been temporarily closed to give the kangaroos space and time to acclimate properly.

The Australia Bush Track exhibit already houses several Australian native species including emus, brolgas, and Cunningham’s skinks. The addition of kangaroos enhances the exhibit’s representation of Australian wildlife.

Auckland Zoo has advised visitors that public sightings of the kangaroos cannot be guaranteed during their initial adjustment period. “It’s still early days for the ‘roos to get to know their new surroundings and our kaimahi,” the zoo noted in a social media post.

The zoo encourages those hoping to see the new residents to monitor their social media channels and website for updates on when the kangaroos will be more readily visible.

The temporary closure of part of the Australia Bush Track allows these iconic marsupials to become comfortable with their new environment, climate, and caregivers. This careful introduction process prioritizes the animals’ welfare while preparing them for eventual public viewing.
While the kangaroos adjust to their new home, Auckland Zoo visitors can still enjoy seeing the other Australian species in the exhibit, offering a glimpse into the diverse wildlife of the Australian bush.
