Recent warnings from the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico urge Americans to exercise increased caution during spring break travel, especially in popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

“Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations,” states the February 19 advisory. The warning emphasizes that dangers can exist even in heavily touristed areas, particularly after dark.

According to data from the U.S. State Department, between January and June 2022, there were 115 deaths of U.S. citizens in Mexico, with 25 classified as homicides. Vehicle accidents accounted for the largest number of fatalities during this period.

Safety Concerns Beyond Crime

The embassy warning extends beyond violent crime to include several other risk factors:

Sexual assault risks, particularly for intoxicated individuals Counterfeit prescription medications and dangerous synthetic drugs Unregulated alcohol that may contain harmful substances Ocean safety hazards including dangerous currents and riptides Strict enforcement of laws against public intoxication and open containers

Former DEA Special Agent Michael Brown, currently global director of counter-narcotics technology at Rigaku Analytical Devices, emphasizes the risks: “If you leave the resort, you’re definitely at high risk, especially if you’re an American female. You’re at risk of kidnapping or being sold into the sex trade.”

Brown notes that while the percentage of visitors who become crime victims remains small, caution is still warranted. “If it’s your child that dies, it’s a big deal,” he says. “So I don’t think we can allow the low percentages to be our moral guidance.”

Recent Incidents Raise Concerns

Several recent cases have highlighted the potential dangers for American tourists:

In 2023, 44-year-old Los Angeles native Niko Honarbakhsh died from a stray bullet during what authorities described as a drug deal gone wrong in Tulum.

California residents Gloria Ambriz (50) and Rafael Cardona (53) were found shot to death in a pickup truck in December 2023 while visiting family in Michoacán state.

In May 2023, two Australian brothers and an American were murdered while on a surfing trip along the coast south of Ensenada. Authorities believe thieves wanted the tires from their truck.

Two Oklahoma college students reported being drugged at a Cancun resort pool bar in August 2023 after drinking what they believed was tainted water. Both became unconscious simultaneously and have no memory of what happened afterward.
