U.S. Dept. of Energy Allocates $118 Million for Sustainable Biofuels Production
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the allocation of $118 million to 17 projects aimed at accelerating the production of sustainable biofuels.
The selected projects, located at universities and commercial businesses, will drive domestic production of biofuels and bioproducts, providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels with lower emissions.
The funding supports President Biden's goals of a fair, clean energy future and achieving economy-wide net-zero emissions by 2050.
The DOE aims to produce cost-competitive biofuels with a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Biofuels offer a low-carbon alternative for transportation and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, produced from domestically available feedstocks and refining technologies.
The funding will support the commercialization of advanced biofuels and reduce technological uncertainty, leading to industry adoption.
The chosen initiatives will scale up biomass to fuel technologies, resulting in the creation of well-paying jobs in nine states' underprivileged and rural populations.
The initiatives align with the first-ever U.S. National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization and the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge.

Most recipients will receive awards ranging from $500,000 to $80 million, and the selections will be handled by the DOE's Bioenergy Technologies Office, subject to final negotiations and eligibility vetting.
