New research shows that electric cars can now last just as long as regular gas-powered cars. A major study looked at nearly 300 million car inspection records in the UK from 2005 to 2022, proving that today’s electric cars can run for about 18.4 years.
Tesla’s cars are setting new records. They can last about 20.3 years and drive up to 204,000 miles – that’s roughly like driving across the United States over 60 times. This is much better than the average electric car, which typically runs for 124,000 miles.
“Electric cars are better for the environment, especially now that we’re using more clean energy,” says Robert Elliott, who studies economics at the University of Birmingham. He explains that while making an electric car creates some pollution, its clean running over many years makes up for this.
Electric cars are getting more reliable each year. The study found that newer electric cars are 12% less likely to have problems compared to last year’s models. Gas cars improved by 6.7%, and diesel cars by 1.9%.
Dr. Viet Nguyen-Tien, who helped with the study, points out that electric cars aren’t just for tech enthusiasts anymore. “They’re now a real choice for anyone buying a car,” he says.

When looking at different car brands, Tesla’s electric cars last the longest. For traditional cars, Skoda’s diesel vehicles can drive up to 181,000 miles over 17.7 years, while Audi’s gas cars typically last 20.9 years and can drive 143,000 miles.
The batteries in electric cars, which used to worry many buyers, are proving very durable. Tesla says their batteries often last longer than the rest of the car. Nissan found that almost all the batteries they made in the last 12 years are still working well.
As more electric cars get older, a market will naturally develop for battery maintenance and replacements. Researchers expect that as more people buy electric cars, battery services will become commonly available and affordable over time.
The study is especially trustworthy because it uses real information from actual car inspections, not just tests in a laboratory. This means the data comes from real-world driving conditions, showing how these vehicles perform in everyday use.
For anyone thinking about buying an electric car, this research shows they can last as long as traditional vehicles. Modern electric vehicles can run for an average of 18.4 years while helping to reduce pollution.
